Two points on that today. First, let’s be clear with definitions.

1. The primary explanation is that an agentic design system is generated by AI and transferred from Figma to code. It produces extensive documentation that describes any design system in Figma using text. Developers no longer need to open Figma, inspect components, or manually translate them into code. I might even rename an agentic design system to “design system code,” although that does not fully express that the code was generated by AI.

2. An agentic design system is also a design system built to support interfaces where AI agents take actions on behalf of users, rather than simply presenting static UI for humans to click through.

It is an emerging concept at the intersection of traditional design systems and AI‑native product design.

Traditional design system: defines how buttons, forms, modals, and navigation look and behave for human users who make decisions.

Agentic design system: extends this to define how the UI communicates agent activity, progress, decisions, and errors when an AI is completing tasks.

Why are agentic design systems beneficial? You no longer need hundreds or thousands of work hours to build or maintain them. They make it far easier to create a new design system from scratch or to generate one based on an existing, well‑crafted system.
